POLYCENTRE is a sound work exploring hybrid listenings formed through folding interrelated and sometimes disparate phonographs of three cities into one another. Composed from field recordings collected periodically in Australia and China within Melbourne, Kaifeng and Suzhou from 2016 to 2019, the work occupies a perspective that oscillates between the ubiquitous sonic identity that global cities increasingly share and the site-specificity of place. Throughout this weave, the experience of a wandering listener on foot emerges, encountering and navigating highly constructed spaces and sound fields within a fictitious and speculative megacity.
This project has been supported by Creative Victoria, through the sustaining creative workers initiative.
