Three Retracings presents a body of sound works exploring sensory and temporal tracings of urban development in Narrm Melbourne, Kaifeng and Suzhou from 2016 to 2019. Returning, re-listening and recording locations in each city over this period, nine works form a set of sonic relations between neighbourhoods undergoing urban transformation. Three Retracings interrogates the contentious role of the field recordist as an itinerant documenter, archive-maker, visitor and tourist through attending to the impact of accumulative listening in different contexts. This browser-based body of work places three listening in conversation to probe the ways in which they shift, append and diverge through revisitation.
I acknowledge the Kaurna People as the traditional owners of the unceded land on which I live and work. I pay my respect to their elders past, present and emerging.
